Ignore this bug.  I eventually figured out that my root directory was getting
too full to write to.  This was not throwing any errors, but started causing
more and more problems.  I did a disk check, and then checked size, and there
was the problem. I deleted an old linux kernel and all the problems went away. 
I am currently trying to figure out how to enlarge that partition on an LVM
encrypted disk.
