For me, it takes the following to reproduce (in merged view):

Create one or more folders and add podcasts to them.
Expand all folders to see all podcasts.
Update all podcasts or download a podcast episode. While Amarok does this, move
the mouse over the podcasts without clicking anything.

This will cause some or all folders to collapse on completion of the download
or the update.

On a side-note: For me it is also unexpected that the podcast view
automatically switches out of merged view when a media player is connected.
Especially as the merged view does not support folders yet.
Maybe this is related?
