the CV lays out applets on startup, and it needs to guesstimate what size to
put them at. the problem is that this happens  before the mainwindow has its
final size, so when you ask the window you get erroneous results.

william's fix for this was to write to config the size of each applet on exit,
and restore to that on startup if possible. so, with fresh config this is not
going to work.

i don't know how much blood/sweat/tears i want to spend on the 2.0 CV as i'm
busy making the 2.1 CV that much cooler. but it definitely needs some love.
