Greetings,

    While I had hoped to have the beta release out in time for the Usenix
conference, the list of things I wanted to put in grew faster than I could
code them up.  So, here is my plan:

    This week I coded and tested a number of bug fixes to the first alpha
release.  I'm out of town next week.  That leaves one more week before the
conference.  I will spend it adding a few more things to make the alpha
version "livable", including a first cut at the users manual, and some
release engineering.  So, we will have a release before the conference, but
I'm going to call it the "second alpha release".

    Then I'll be able to test the new features at our local sites at a
slightly more leisurely pace, and make the Beta release later in the
Summer.  I'm excited about the new features, I think Amanda is going to be
much better because of them.  But I don't want to release them while they
are still 1/2 baked.
