I'm experiencing some wierdness with the ESS Maestro in my Dell Latitude
CPx. The module loads, however i get the following in my logs (with
debug=detect):

snd: snd_maestro_create: io: 0xd800
snd: ESM: Dev Cap:656 290
snd: ESM: Dev Rev:16 10
snd: ESM: Sub Vendor:4136 1028
snd: ESM: Sub ID:170 aa
snd: requested ports 0xd800-0xd8ff busy

And all opens of the device fail, like this example from aplay:

Aplay: version 0.5.8 by Jaroslav Kysela <perex@suse.cz>
Using soundcard 'ESS Maestro 2E at 0xd800, irq 5'
Error: audio open error: Operation not permitted

I assume that the "requested ports busy" error is a Bad Thing(tm). On that
assumtion I looked at my /proc/ioports and discovered that port was
allocated to the ESS:

d800-d8ff : ESS Maestro

It is the ALSA modules which are grabbing this, because i have tried it from
a completely clean boot where i have verified via /proc/ioports that the
port isn't in use.

I'd like to try and get this to work cuz the OSS drivers for this card suck
donkey dick, however, I have no idea where to start. Suggestions? I am a
programmer, but haven't done much kernel hacking, so use small words. :-)

FYI:
Kernel ver 2.2.16
ALSA ver 0.5.8b
Also, the OSS driver does work... kinda... it sounds crappy and screws up a
lot (noise, etc)...

Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?
