I feel as you do.  I've been a massive ALSA fan for a while for exactly
the same reason: OSS wanted to charge me for one of their broken drivers
(for an ENS1370), and then along came ALSA with a driver that worked
great - for free.  And it's a _much_ better API.  And I haven't even
begun to rave about the sequencer.

ALSA's main problem is OSS.  People need to be aware of ALSA and to use
it and to start writing apps for it instead of OSS.  This does seem to
be happening, but I don't think a little more evangelism will hurt
anything.

ALSA's main strength, as far as adoption, is that it can do lots of
things which OSS can't do and will never be able to do.  OSS is
unworkable for serious hard-disk recording, and their "sequencer" is, in
my opinion, a joke.  (I wouldn't be so upset at them if I hadn't
actually paid for their crap software in the past ..)
