We have been using this workaround for a while for building Mozilla on
AIX: http://www.mozilla.org/unix/aix.html#notes.

I have not looked into it further, but we also found /bin/sh to be very
slow when running configure scripts. Our configure times for Mozilla went
from around 45 minutes to 5 minutes after making this change.

[tbox-l] Building gcc with bash

Have the maintainers of gcc noted the latest recommendations from the gcc
group in the *-ibm-aix* section of the 'hints' to

CONFIG_SHELL=/opt/freeware/bin/bash
export CONFIG_SHELL

before running configure?

It dropped a 12 hour build time to 4 on one of my machines.

Thought you might want to try this if you were not already aware...

Which also brings up a question as to what is so broken about ksh/sh that
it makes the machine go into 8 hours of cpu wait....
