But isn't there a way to make a boot slice on the tape,
and then 'fsf' the tape forward and use 'backup' or 'dd' to
put the actual mksysb image after that? I thought I had
heard there's a way to do this...

Be aware, that mksysb writes several slices when creating a mksysb-tape. The
first slice contains the boot and the last slice contains the actual files.
When you tar a disk-based mksysb-image to a tape you only write 1 slice and
the boot-program has no way of finding the correct contents of the image.
As far as I know you can only use disk-based mksysb-images when you want to
restore files or if you are using NIM.

Fellow AIXERS,
I am attempting to copy a MKSYSB image stored in a directory to a tape.
This will then allow me to clone a standalone machine.. The problem I am
experiencing i that when I try to install the stand alone RS6000 it is
unable to read the image I tar'd to the tape.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
