Subject:    changing password without prompts

There is bound to be a way to set a password for a user from root without it
being interactive. I have tried passwd and pwdadm with pipes and redirected
files with no success. I would like to avoid using expect, if possible. Is
there a way of doing this short of writing a quick C program?
