i took your advise, and removed those pest csm files and ...

aixdev10
# oslevel -r
5300-05
# oslevel -s
5300-05-05
# 


voila...

thank you very much,

summary:  what was compromising and holding down the full upgrade to 53005 
was those csm files  (csm.server, csm.client, etc.) after removing 
approximately 10 filesets, the machine responded with the 5300-05-05 .
