There's no funding; AbiWord is a project run completely by volunteers in
their free time. Many of the core developers have been around for at
least five years, but they consist of a small few (around 5, I would
say). Although they represent a sense of continuity, contributors have
come and gone over the years and, like with most hobbies, interest tends
to wax and wane on an individual level.

A unit testing framework exists, but it really hasn't been used widely
at all. Honestly, the best way to get things done is to provide patches
or donate your time by helping to debug a problem, filing clear bug
reports, etc., since there are very few people working on AbiWord at any
given moment. [I'm sending this email to the user list in case anyone
else would like to add to this.]
