Hi Mark:

 I think I discovered the problem. There is no aspell-en in SuSE 8.2. There 
was such a package in SuSE 8.1. I checked their ftp site. I will write them 
and ask about it. No wonder Abiword has no spellcheck : (.  Thanks for the 
heads up on that.
